What’s included in root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment removes infection from inside the tooth and protects it from further damage. It’s a routine procedure that relieves pain, stops the spread of infection, and allows you to keep your natural tooth.
Here’s what your root canal appointment includes at Chatham Dental:
Thorough examination and diagnosis
We assess the tooth, take X-rays, and confirm the extent of the infection or inflammation before planning treatment.
Comfortable numbing
Local anaesthetic is used to keep the procedure pain-free. We warm the anaesthetic to reduce discomfort during injection.
Rubber dam placement
A soft, flexible rubber sheet isolates the tooth, keeping the area clean, dry, and protected throughout the procedure.
Removal of infected tissue
We create a small opening in the tooth to access and remove the infected pulp, relieving the source of pain.
Cleaning and shaping of the canals
Using specialised instruments, the inside of the tooth is thoroughly disinfected and shaped for sealing.
Filling and sealing the tooth
The cleaned space is filled with a biocompatible material to prevent bacteria from returning.
Placement of a temporary or permanent restoration
A temporary filling is placed between visits if necessary. In most cases, a crown is recommended afterwards to restore full strength.
